Active Power, Inc. (Active Power) is a manufacturer and provider of power solutions incorporating uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems that provide business continuity to enterprises requiring protection against electrical power disturbances. The Company's products are designed to deliver continuous power, protecting customers from voltage fluctuations, such as surges and sags and frequency fluctuations, and also to provide ride-through, or temporary, power to bridge the gap between a power outage and the restoration of utility power. As of December 31, 2008, it had shipped more than 2,100 flywheels in UPS system installations, delivering more than 525 megawatts of power to customers in more than 40 countries around the world. CleanSource Products
The Company markets its flywheel products under the brand name CleanSource. CleanSource DC is a battery-free replacement for lead-acid batteries used for bridging power. CleanSource DC is a direct current (DC) product compatible with all brands of UPS systems. It sells and markets products in North America, Europe and Asia.

CoolAir Product
CoolAir DC uses mature thermal and compressed air storage (TACAS) technologies to produce backup power during an electrical disturbance. As a by-product of its operation, CoolAir DC discharges cool air that can be used by customers during an electrical disturbance as a source of backup cooling to mitigate thermal runaway in their operations.

GenSTART
GenSTART is a battery-free, starting modular system designed to ensure a customer's diesel generator will start. GenSTART provides 1725 cold cranking amps to the generator set starting motor, so the customer can be assured starting power is available when it is most critical.

PowerHouse Systems
PowerHouse contains the Company's CleanSource UPS, GenSTART, switchgear, monitoring software and diesel generator. These systems are designed to handle the demands of high-tech facilities requiring the power integrity available while maximizing up time, useable floor space and operational efficiency. Its systems are offered as a containerized solution that is available in a series of modular formats, enabling sizing for infrastructure on demand.

Active Power Receives Order from Blue Chip Manufacturer
Flywheel UPS Systems Selected for High Reliability and Energy Efficiency

AUSTIN, Texas (March 23, 2009) – Critical backup power systems manufacturer Active Power, Inc. (NASDAQ: ACPW) today announced an order from a blue chip manufacturer for nearly two megawatts of its CleanSource UPS (uninterruptible power supply) systems. The flywheel based UPS systems will provide power conditioning and protection against power sags, fluctuations and outages for the customer's manufacturing facility located in the Northeastern U.S. The systems will ship in late first quarter 2009 with installation following soon after.

"Downtime due to power disturbances costs U.S. manufacturing companies hundreds of millions of dollars annually in lost productivity," said Gary Rackow, vice president of Sales, Americas for Active Power. "Not only do these businesses face costly downtime, but they also must incur unplanned expenses to reset, service and sometimes even repair equipment damaged by a critical process interruption. Active Power's flywheel technology is seven times less likely to fail than conventional double conversion UPS with batteries, making the system extremely predictable in a mission critical environment."

With more than 2,000 flywheels shipped since 1992, Active Power's critical backup power systems have accrued more than 50 million hours of field runtime. The system also provides up to twice the power in half the footprint and can operate to extended temperatures, reaching as high as 104 degrees Fahrenheit – as compared to a conventional UPS system. As a result, this saves operators money in reduced floor space requirements and cooling costs.
